Tornado Safety Information for Tulsa and the surrounding areas

Green Country Be Prepared

·         Of course as many of you may know the best way to becoming prepared is to learn about the event it’s self. So here is some information about tornadoes that many of you may not know.

·         Tornadoes can strike quickly leaving little to no warning

·         They can be viewed as transparent until dust or debris is picked up, or until a cloud forms in the funnel.

·         Tornadoes can vary in speed from stationary up to 70 mph. The average speed of a tornado is 30 mph.

·         Tornadoes may move in any direction but normally they move from Southwest to Northeast.

·         Tornadoes can accompany tropical storms and hurricanes when they are moving onto land.

·         Peak tornado season in the southern states is March through May.

·         Tornadoes can occur at any time but are most frequent between 3 and 9p.m.

Tornado Warning-Means seek shelter immediately

·         In most buildings make sure to take shelter on the lowest floor in the center of the location away from all windows, doors, corners and outside walls.

·         If you are in a vehicle or mobile home get out immediately and go to the lowest floor of a nearby building or storm shelter.

·         If you are outside with no shelter lie flat in a ditch or depression with your hands over your head. Do not go under an overpass. You are safer the lower to the ground you are. Watch out for flying debris.
